Antiques/Philips Radio

This Radio was purchased in the month of October 1963 for Rs 450/-. In those days, unlike now, Radio was a fancy, luxury and one and the only medium of entertainment. There were many types of radios like National & Co, Murphy etc amongst which Philips Radio was leading in the market. Of course, Rs 450/- in 1963 was very high compared to the standard of living and purchasing power of people. This radio has given a long service and is currently non functional due to a defective volve[I guess we can not get this repaired :-( ]. With the advent of Television and other entertainment media, the radio is loosing its significance. This Radio can be tuned to 5 bands and has options to connect a Record Player and Gramophone. We still have the Murphy Gramophone but again in non functional condition. Thanks to my father for giving me the exact date and amount of purchase. He was very happy when I told him that I would put the content on the net.

This radio brings back the nostalgic moments of my early childhood. We used to tune into the Radio Silone to listen to Srilankan National Anthem which used to be aired at around 11 in the night. At home, with this radio around, Mornings used to start of with the lovely Vividh Bharthi tune followed by the tune of Vande Matharam and news in Sankrit. Being in a cricket crazy family, this was our only source for getting the cricket updates. I still remember the level of anxiety when the commentators used to shout on top of their lungs to explain to the listeners that there is something happening in the field. We glued to this same radio when Kapil Dev made an unbeaten 175* against Zimbabwe and won the match single handedly that brought us the World Cup 1983. (Unfortunately, there is not even a single video coverage of this particular match). Gone are those days now with the advent of satellite TVs and interenet. What an age we are in. We must admit we are in the best of the times when it comes to communication. Thanks to Science and Technology.
